Description

Søren Kjærsgaard, 1935-2009, was a Danish painter and graphic artist whose work focused on a range of subject matter, from portraits and still life works to observations of humans and animals. He became a member of the Danish artist cooperative Grønningen in 1964, and in 1983 he received the Eckersberg Medal.

This still life painting gains its rich texture and colour from many layers of oil paint. The muted colour palette is recognisably associated with colours used in mid-century painting. Earthy hues provide a rich base to highlight the contrasts of the complementary colours orange and blue. Areas of textured paintwork draw us closer, inviting us to explore the arrangement of shapes and objects on the table.
