Description

Jørgen Brynjolf (1931-1993) was a Danish artist. He worked in a range of forms throughout his life, from paper collages to paintings, enamelwork to ceramics. He was a part of the Odsherred Painters who worked in Odsherred in Zealand, Denmark, who took inspiration from the land around them. He exhibited throughout Europe in the mid-twentieth century, including in Paris and Kalundborg, Denmark.

His abstract style developed through his career, evident across the different materials he used. This painting, an example of his earlier work, makes use of the abstract motifs that would define his artistic output. Placing shapes together which at once produce a harmony and disharmony allows Brynjolf to produce deeply expressive pieces. This painting, titled ‘Roma’, evokes architectural shapes and the sense of place that its name seems to gesture towards.
