Abstract Danish Oil Painting from the 1980s

By creating texture through the layering of brushstrokes on top of one another, the unknown artist of this piece produces a depth and intricacy that is surprising for a piece that appears, at first glance, formally simple. The abstract subject of the painting is given meaning not only by its finish, but also by the soft and cold blue tones juxtaposed by the warmer, deeper shapes in its foreground. A general sense of wateriness established by its blue tones is emphasised by the teardrop shapes that almost drip down the piece. What appears to be a simplistic painting appears, on a second look, to be laden with complexity of texture, colour, and ambiguity.
