Description
In this oil on canvas, the artist appears to explore the boundaries of where figurative painting ends and abstraction begins. The dark forms suggest that the subject matter could be a city skyline against a bright blue sky, and the extended vertical height of the canvas further emphasises this notion of tall structures. But the painting can also be appreciated purely for its abstract mix of colours, lines and textures.
A prominent feature of this work is the thick layering of oil paint. The use of heavily applied paint running vertically, combined with gestural, sweeping strokes towards the bottom of the canvas give a sense of movement and energy. The use of thick, textured paint is known as Impasto. The technique re-emerged in the mid-twentieth century, when other artists such as Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff used Impasto to an extreme to create heavily textured works.
The painting is signed by ‘E. Lehmann’ and dated 1963.
