1971 Oil Painting by Henning Møller

Description

Henning Møller was born in 1924 in the eastern city of Aarhus, Denmark. He was educated either by, or at the art school of, a fellow artist, Børge L. Knudsen. Whilst relatively little of his work is in circulation today, he exhibited several times in Copenhagen in between 1960 and 1980.

Furthermore, little is known of Møller’s life. It is known, however, that he travelled to France, Italy, and Poland during the mid-twentieth century. His art speaks from the shapes and form of the abstract works that emerged in Europe in the early part of the century whilst also looking forward to the tenets of abstract expressionism. In both his painting and collage works, Møller layers and pieces together different shapes to produce both texture and intricacy.

This piece, unlike the other currently at CHASE & SORENSEN, makes use of white and blues tones. It is more restrained than the other piece, with shapes and figures that are easier to discern, even if they are abstract. Yet, these images are placed in what appears to be a highly ordered and constructed scheme. Misleadingly plain at first glance, it encourages the onlooker to keep looking and to search for more than what first meets the eye.
