Description

Born in Nørre Tranders, Aalborg, artist Egon Sørensen (1936-2007) produced oil paintings and drawings during his artistic career, regularly exhibiting his vast body of work throughout Denmark. In many of his paintings and drawings he captured rural scenes, often of the Himmerland landscape, farms and villages. This painting bears typical hallmarks of the work by the artist, from the minimal scene to the thick application of paint.

The composition has a definitive structure and the buildings in the foreground create a framing effect around the central building, drawing our eye directly to this intended main focal point. Upon closer viewing, we see that the surface of the canvas is richly textured with heavily applied paint. This tactile quality of the paint evokes worn, stone-like surfaces and creates a sense that we are observing an outdoor scene weathered by its climate.
