Description
Artist Sarus Nielsen (1897-1973) was born in Odense, Denmark and studied painting at the technical school in Odense under the guidance of artist A. C. Tersløse. Throughout his body of art, he worked with a range of subject matter, from depicting the rural landscapes of Lapland to scenes of children playing.
A distinctive feature of this piece is the striking diagonal composition, whose central dark form draws the eye over the canvas in a flowing, curved movement. The artist has explored the expressive qualities of colour. By using a contrasting combination of bold and muted hues, Nielsen has created a sense of depth, sculpted shapes and enhanced the sense of movement. The loosely shaped forms of this oil on canvas are typical visual characteristics of work by the artist, who frequently created radiant, glowing paintings.
Note: Some colour loss to the left side of the painting. Otherwise in good vintage condition.
