Description

Ulrik Hoff is a contemporary painter born in 1938 in Frederiksberg, Denmark. He studied at the prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1960 and 1966, under widely regarded artists Søren Hjorth Nielsen and Palle Nielsen. Since graduating, he has appeared in a number of exhibitions including those in Denmark, the Netherlands, and the USA.

He works predominantly in oil, using large brushstrokes and evocative colour palettes to produce landscapes and environments that feel tangible to the onlooker. Throughout his long career, Hoff has carved out a distinct way of depicting a sense of place. This painting, produced just a year after he had graduated from art school, makes use of a blurry, soft focussed style that Hoff still continues to use in more recent works. Whilst many of his pieces show summer scenes abundant with nature, Hoff is careful to present snow-covered landscapes with the same degree of admiration and sensitivity. His keen eye for portraying the nuance and textures of the natural world is felt here through its considered brushstrokes and subtle variations of tone.
