Signed by Simon Jü and dated 1969, this oil on board combines bold colour and striking brushwork to create a painting full of life and energy, suggesting that the artist believes art should be expressive and spontaneous. The artist has applied thick, often unblended paint to the surface in gestural marks, and combined with the fluid nature of the composition, we are given the impression this work was created at speed.
The circular forms remind us of common representations from the real world, ranging from flowers with petals, to eyes or even fireworks, but they can also be appreciated purely as playful abstract shapes. This artist’s appreciation for spontaneous, gestural painting is reminiscent of the work of influential Dutch painter Karel Appel.
