Abstract Cast Iron Sculptures from the 1960s

This pair of sculptures create space in and around themselves. Forms of metal punctuate our view, creating asymmetrical shapes in space. Although the three-dimensional forms are welded together, we can appreciate the tension and sensation of gravity that the artist has created through the balancing of these heavy forms.

The hard, engineered edges of the metal evoke the industrialised world, while the build-up of surface patina reminds us of nature’s eternal ability to affect and weather materials. The smooth, gliding curves of the metal provide a striking contrast with its hard heaviness, as well as creating a sense of fluid movement.
