Description

Lasse Birk (1944-2020) is known for working as a ceramic artist, producing a range of objects and vessels, as well as relief work such as this.

In this relief, the artist has modeled clay into smooth, flowing forms that are punctuated by scored line work. Upon first impression, we sense that the artist has observed scenes from nature, from the muted earthy tones and stone-like shape of the three-dimensional forms, to the suggestion of a blue-skied horizon. On closer viewing, the sculpted shapes evoke the fluid, muscular qualities of the human form.

The artist has applied a range of finishes to this relief on board, which when used in combination, emphasise the tactile nature of ceramic works. We see chalky surfaces that draw focus to the raw, porous qualities of terracotta, contrasting with rich glazes and metal-like bronze colours.
